AGRI_CULTURE : Thesis Project

Planting public spaces with foodscapes institutionalises the role of food in the city and is the best chance for advancing agricultural literacy. Agriculture is already a big part of Bormla’s culture and currently takes place on appropriated public land. Gnien Bormla offers the right infrastructure to introduce these foodscapes in order to inform residents and visitors regarding the importance of food consumption.
MASTERPLAN
HOME BASE
A home base that formally introduces a support system for this new form of institutionalization is required to back up such activities that are happening in the garden. Understanding that the home base is now an established node that focuses on the cultural aspects of agriculture in the neighbourhood and will act as the focal point of such activities. This give visitors the freedom to wonder around and gain agricultural literacy through the proposed programme (formal mentorship or informal spectacle).

Food is something that we all experience on a day-to-day basis, but few people actually have the knowledge or care to think critically about its production and potentials. The proposed home base is an intervention that introduces subtle programmes that allows visitors to gain agricultural literacy through formal mentorship programmes, such as indoor vertical farming classes, and other events that are considered insufficient without the aid of crop production, such as the farmers market and the food court.
